Jesus Was a Democrat?
I know that title got your attention.
So now that you’re mad at me beucase I used Jesus and Democrat in the same sentence – or implied he is one lets talk about it. A friend of mine pointed me to Everclear’s new song ‘Jesus Was a Democrat.’ I went to their site for it, downloaded it and listened to it. I have to say upfront I don’t agree with the song in it’s entirety. I do agree with some of the song though – and I think you should too. You can hear a lot of the frustration that Alexakis (Everclear’s lead man) has with Christians. He has some really good insights.
You should go to the site and download the song and listen to it. Read through the lyrics – you will agree with some of them. Like this;

I think he hits the nail on the head here. Jesus died for everyone not just some. Even the Muslims, Jews, pornstars, bullies, murders and racists. I think that’s something we don’t like to talk about but the atonement of Christ is for everyone not just a select few. I definitely don’t think he was a liberal – but a radical? Yeah he was a radical. Jesus did die to save us from a fiery hell and to save us from ourselves. He wants to set us free – IF we will let him.
What are your thoughts?
I think inasmuch as the lyricist is criticizing the lack of love shown by right-wing Christians, especially during the political season, he’s right on. That doesn’t necessarily equate to “Jesus was a Democrat”, though.
I can see why someone outside the faith would see Jesus as a democrat as Christians have created an image of hate, discrimination, that we are the judge and jury of people who aren’t of like faith, and more. Democrats tend to be more concerned with social issues (though usually taken way to the left) and excepting of people where they are. The thing I don’t agree with for Christian democrats is that they want the government to fix these types of issues and not just make it happen because of the call to do so from the Bible and the way of life God calls us to when decide to pick up our cross and follow Him daily. I don’t disagree with the principles of socialism but I don’t want the government to force it on us, I want us (Christians) to act like the early Christians in Acts and freely give of ourselves and our stuff because of our love for them and our love for God. These are just my two cents, thanks for sharing the song I’m going to go download it and check it out.

Demoncrats advocate killing innocent unborn children. I am sorry, but I really don’t think Jesus condones murdering the helpless. Jesus would vote for McCain.
@ Robbie: I agree with you. I don’t think he was a democrat. As for not condoning the killing of innocent people – what about in the OT where God commanded people to kill the men, women, children and in some cases all of the animals as well? Were there “innocent” people that were killed then?
Also is our definition of “innocent” different than that of God’s? Just questions for further discussion

Right-wing, Evangelical neo-cons advocate for the death penalty and for bombing abortion clinics and killing the doctors who perform said abortions. You act like Democrats are encouraging women to have abortions. That’s just not the case. Nobody likes abortion. If abortion were illegal we would go right back to back alley unsafe abortions. BTW, Democratic ideas regarding comprehensive sex education and availability of birth control causes LESS abortions. Before you flame me, I am a Christian who does my very best to adhere to the teachings of Jesus Christ from the Gospels. The word Christian means “Christ-like” and I have not seen very much Christ-like acts from the McCain/PALIN supporters lately, particularly, their Evangelical base.

So choosing the “lesser” of 2 evils is ok? If the Dem’s don’t like abortion then why not outlaw it? If you accept something then you’re promoting it. If you’re promoting then you agree with it.
You are absolutely right – people don’t act very Christ-like when it comes to politics…our true nature seems to come out and it’s ugly.

Outlawing abortion won’t eradicate abortion. I’m a nurse and I used to work in a nursing home. One of my patients used to perform the “coat hanger abortions” in the 60s. The memory of hearing her tell those horrible stories still sends a chill down my spine. Since there will be no way of truly ending abortion, the humane thing to do is provide legal, safe abortions.
How do you feel about a woman having an abortion in the case of rape or incest? How about if a woman’s health is at risk? What is your stance on birth control whether it be pills or condoms? Do you realize that not every woman is on the pill due to pregnancy prevention. Do you know that many woman rely on the hormones in the birth control pills to regulate menstrual cycles or ovarian cysts or excruciating endometriosis pain? There are pharmacists all over the country who refuse to fill prescriptions for birth control right now in 2008.
Say a woman were to become pregnant due to rape or condom failure? This woman is in no position to carry a baby much less raise it. Say she is forced to carry said baby. The repubs don’t care about this baby after it is born, only while it’s a 4-cell organism in the womb. If that baby grows up and commits murder, the repubs have no problem with the death sentence. Why shouldn’t living breathing people have rights?
The humane thing to do is to allow it? What about what the Bible says about the topic of life? Do we throw out the parts we don’t like then and accept only the ones we do?

I’m sorry, I hit send too quickly. Out of everything that I typed, you zeroed in on one part of one sentence and you took it out of context. From what I gather you have no compassion for the living, only for the embryos. I respect your opinion, I just find it sad that you’re so incredibly unwilling to have a serious debate about this. I would have liked your input on the other questions I posed. My point about the shrimp is that the Bible says that to eat shrimp or pork is an abomination, so if you do, you should rethink it. Also, don’t shave anymore and no more wearing poly-cotton blends countless other things. Just saying.
Don’t worry, I’m not coming back, so you won’t be bothered by me anymore. I’m sure you wouldn’t like me anyway I have a large circle of friends and several of them are homosexual. Take care.

I believe that all life has a purpose. I believe that Psalm139:13 holds true. Do horrible injustices happen? Yes. Should there punishment for them? Yes. Does that mean that the unborn baby losing it’s life is ok? I don’t think so.

It’s more than an “organism” it’s a human life. “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.” (Psalm 139:13)
